MontaVista Software and Movial announced that they are teaming up to provide a messaging platform for Linux-based consumer electronics devices.

The companies said they will pair Movial's instant messaging and multimedia messsaging software with MontaVista's recently announced version of Linux for consumer electronics.

"Our vision is that Linux will be everywhere," said Movial CEO Jari Ala-Ruona. "Movial and MontaVista Software together provide a smart consumer communications platform -- a powerful operating system integrated with compelling smart communication applications such as instant messaging, and upcoming MMS, VoIP and multimedia."

Movial's products include wireless instant messaging applications, and are specifically targeted at handheld devices such as PDAs and smart phones. They incorporate real-time communication and messaging over fixed and mobile networks through SIP/SIMPLE, Wireless Village and Jabber, as well as other technologies such as J2ME. These products are interoperable with MontaVista Linux and the WebSphere Micro Environment for MontaVista Linux, MontaVista Software's Java product offering.
