ActiveSync for Windows Mobile Devices Updated

By PocketPC City Staff
October 14, 2003

Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1 is the latest synchronization software for Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs and Smartphones.

According to the company, ActiveSync 3.7.1 contains fixes making synchronization more trouble free than before and includes all the significant improvements brought in by ActiveSync 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7. If you had not already installed ActiveSync 3.5, ActiveSync 3.7.1 will also bring you up to date with compatibility to Microsoft Office XP and Windows XP.

Microsoft said ActiveSync 3.7.1 addresses the top USB connectivity issues resulting in a significant increase in connectivity reliability. Specifically, ActiveSync 3.7.1:

--Enhances USB driver to improve connection stability and avoid crashes
--Improves detection of cradled devices
--Addresses issue with ActiveSync falling into guest mode repeatedly
--Addresses issue where desktop fails to detect cradled device
--Addresses issue where device and desktop report different connection states and sync does not start
--Improves the reliability of large file transfers
--Enhances Desktop Connection Wizard UI to make connection setup easier
--Improves stability to reduce application level crashes

The updates found in versions 3.5 and 3.6 that are also a part of 3.7.1 include a new Partnership Wizard to configure a mobile device to synchronize with a server. (Note that this functionality is available if your company is running Microsoft Mobile Information Server 2002 or later.) Also, if you are already synchronizing with a server, the options to configure your server synchronization settings are now easier to use.

If you use AvantGo and have installed an upgrade (such as the AvantGo Security Upgrade for Pocket PC devices), installing ActiveSync 3.7.1 will prevent AvantGo from syncing properly. To fix this problem, please reinstall the latest version of AvantGo.
