By James Alan Miller Audiovox and AT&T Wireless today introduced the smallest Windows Mobile-based Smartphone in North America, the Audiovox SMT5600. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the Audiovox SMT5600 for release in the United States back in August. Previously only available in Europe from mobile operator Orange as the SPV C500, the new tri-band (GSM 850/1800/1900) smartphone measures only 4.25 x 1.8 x 0.6 inches and weighs a measly 3.6 ounces. Other features include a 200MHz Texas Instruments OMAP processor, 32 MB of RAM, 64 MB of ROM, Bluetooth, a minSD slot and a 2.2-inch display that supports a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. The Audiovox SMT5600 includes the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software for Smartphones and is the first Windows Mobile-based Smartphone featuring Windows Media Player 10 Mobile. This enables the seamless transfer of media from a PC running Windows XP. It is also the first Windows Mobile-based smartphone with an integrated camera in the United States. The VGA digital camera supports low-light capabilities, 4x digital zoom, and a camcorder function. AT&T Wireless VP of Business Data Solutions Abhi Ingle said "We expect the compact design and advanced capabilities of the new Audiovox SMT5600 to prove extremely popular with mobile professional and businesses looking for access to critical business and personal information such as e-mail, instant messaging, text messaging and corporate applications.” AT&T Wireless is selling the Audiovox SMT5600 for $199.99 after rebates with a two-year voice and data service contract.
