PalmGear BREWs Over-the-Air Software Distribution

By James Miller
February 13, 2004

PalmGear has struck a deal with QUALCOMM under which it it will supply applications that can be delivered wirelessly to Palm OS devices via QUALCOMM’s BREW Distribution System. Over-the-air distribution of software to handhelds, especially smartphones, is seen as an important step towards making these devices successful and more attractive to users.

Under the agreement, PalmGear plans to make its catalog of Palm OS-based applications available to wireless operators who use QUALCOMM’s BREW Shop over-the-air download service. Consumers with BREW Shop-enabled devices will be able to use the system to shop for and download applications, wirelessly, with no connection back to a PC, in categories ranging from productivity and database utilities to graphic programs, games and eBooks.

The relationship stems from the announcement last fall of PalmSource and PalmGear partnering to create a new PalmSource online store. PalmSource began collaboration with QUALCOMM over a year ago to create a Palm OS application delivery system.

PalmGear, PalmSource and QUALCOMM claim they will help generate additional revenue for wireless carriers through software sales, increased network usage, and the ability to drive sales of handhelds and smartphones by equipping consumers with the applications they need to take full advantage of the devices’ capabilities. PalmGear said it thinks the agreement will also give its stable of more than 15,000 Palm OS developers a new sales channel for their software titles.
