Series 60 Portal Opens

By SmartPhoneToday Staff
February 19, 2004

Series 60.com is a new portal opened by Nokia, the creator of the Series 60 platform, and other Series 60 licensees, including Panasonic, Samsung, Siemens and Sendo. The site was created to serve as a "One-Stop-Shop" for all Series 60 platform information.

Series 60 is a Symbian OS based smartphone terminal software product that is used to create smartphones with large color screens, a user interface for single-handed navigation, and a suite of mobile friendly applications. Most Symbian smartphones on the market are based on the Series 60 platform

Accordingly, the new site is a common and shared public web channel of Series 60 licensees, a main portal of Series 60 platform information, and an access point to Series 60 Platform developer resources, such as links to SDKs and other development tools. It includes information, news, documentation and community features.

The portal is divided into the following sections: Developers, Terminal Manufacturers, Operators, Enterprises, Product Creation Community and Devices.

Earlier this month, Nokia announced it would acquire all of Psion's shares of Symbian, upping its share of the ownership of Symbian to 63.3%. The launch of this portal and Nokia's further investment in Symbian are indications that the company is strengthening its position in the mobile market. This is happening as devices based on Microsoft's smartphone platform begin deploy. In fact, Symbian was developed in the first place in part because of the threat that Microsoft might pose in the wireless world.
