By James Miller
Yesterday, Motorola made news by showing off an innovative smartphone, the MPx, based on Microsoft's Pocket PC Phone Edition version of Windows Mobile. Unlike most Pocket PC phones, the GSM MPx is a dual-hinge device that opens both lengthways as a clamshell phone and in landscape mode with a wide screen and full QWERTY keyboard. By opening the device in landscape mode, Internet browsing, streaming video and access to corporate applications are possible. It is also Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. (Click here for more on the MPx) Next came a new type of Windows Smartphone, the MPx100. Unlike Motorola's current Windows Smartphone, the MPx200, the MPx100 isn't a clamshell device but uses a more traditional candy bar design. (Click here for more on the MPx100) Now we've got two more handsets, both 3G, the Symbian-based A1000 and the E1000, which is built on a proprietary operating system. The A1000 (see image) is Motorola's second Symbian-based phone after the A925. It is built on Symbian OS 7.0 and is designed to work on a GSM/GPRS (900/1800/1900 MHz) networks. It uses the UIQ user interface, which is also, for example, implemented by the Sony Ericsson P900. The screen size of the smartphone's active matrix TFT color display is 208x320 pixels. It supports 65,536 colors. There is also a integrated 1.2 megapixel camera which can take still and video and has a 4x digital zoom. It can also play MP3 files. The A1000 delivers Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF document viewing via Picsel Document Viewer and full HTML browsing via Opera. The unit also offers two-way video conferencing, SMS, MMS, and email. PIM applications, such as Contacts, Notes and Calendar, can synchronize via SyncML (OTA) or to a desktop. It also offers USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Location based services are provided through A-GPS. Virtual Private Networks are slated to be supported too. Customizable Options include downloadable applications, ringtones, wallpaper and audio video content via J2ME. It has 24MB of internal memory. The A1000 won't be available till the fourth in quarter. According to Motorola, the GSM/GPRS E1000 is designed to provide users with the latest in mobile entertainment and communications for digital gamers and entertainment enthusiasts. It features the ability to play mobile movies on the handset's high-resolution screen with MPEG4 video, music through a built-in MP3 player and removable memory, high-speed mobile access to the Internet and two-way video telephony. For mobile location services, the model E1000 offers integrated AGPS technology. This handset also offers the ability to connect with one person or a group with the touch of a button through push-to-talk technology. It has a 1.2 megapixel digital camera with an 8x zoom. Like the A1000, the Motorola E1000 isn't expected till the second half of the year. Related Links:
