Italian website telefonino.net has published details about Samsung's next Palm OS smartphone, the SGH-i530. The SGH-i530 is the sequel to the SGH-i500, which was never made available by a mobile operator.

According to telefonino.net, the SGH-i530 will be a tri-band GSM/GPRS (900/1800/1900) smartphone that won't be EDGE (Enhanced Data GSM Evolution) compatible. EDGE is speedier version of GSM that goes has high as 384 Kbps. It is aimed at advanced mobile services and multimedia for 3G. The SGH-i530, like most current smartphones, will deliver Web access via a browser and WAP, as well as send SMS, MMS and email messages. MP3 audio and MPEG-4 video playback are also supported.

The SGH-i530, which will be based on Palm OS Garnet 5.2., will also have an integrated camera of unknown resolution, 32MB or RAM, a Secure Digital slot for memory expansion and a 324 x 352 pixel resolution touchscreen display that supports 65,536 colors. In addition, there will be a secondary OLED display on the back of the top half of the clamshell smartphone that supports 96 x 128 pixels. The processor speed of the device is still unknown, and it appears that it won't be Bluetooth enabled, so users won't be able use wireless headsets with it out of the box.

There are also reports that Samsung is planning on giving a SGH-i530 to thousands of VIPs, athletes, and officials at the Olympics next summer. In addition, a CDMA version may be coming from Sprint. It should be available to the general public later this spring or the summer.

Samsung is one of the leading developers of smartphones. It is a company that hasn't put all its eggs in one basket, as it has released several models in both the Palm and Windows Mobile for Pocket PC and Smartphone operating systems. A pre-curser to the SGH-i530, the SGH-i505 was approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in United States last month.
