Documents To Go Goes Native

By James Alan Miller
August 16, 2004

DataViz today released version 7 of Documents To Go Premium Edition, bringing native PowerPoint support to the most popular mobile office application for the Palm platform.

The addition of PowerPoint support allows Documents To Go users to read and edit documents from the three primary Microsoft Office applications-Word, Excel and PowerPoint-in their native format. So attachments received via wireless e-mail on a Treo 600 smartphone, for example, can be worked on without syncing them to a computer first. The software also adds JPEG and BMP image support.

Before native document support, the Documents To Go desktop application converted Microsoft Office files to a special handheld format that Documents To Go could open. Then the files were synchronized to the handheld. With native support, transferring and opening files requires no desktop application or pre-processing of files.

Other new features in version 7 include a new handheld user interface, support for displaying Chinese, Russian, and Greek character sets, and integration between word processing documents and wireless browsers and e-mail applications. Documents To Go Premium Edition Version 7 is also the first version of Documents To Go that allows Mac users to use PowerPoint files on the handheld.

DataViz sells Documents To Go Premium Edition for $50. Upgrade pricing of $29.99 is available for all previous Documents To Go customers, including those who received Documents To Go as bundled software with palmOne, Sony CLIÉ, or AlphaSmart handhelds.
