Although the information doesn't come from a Gypsy Reader & Advisor, the cosmic tealeaves are hinting that a new Nokia smartphone and three Hewlett-Packard Pocket PCs may be landing in consumers' hands by the end of the year.

And we don't mean the new iPAQs announced by HP back in July (see HP Launches Wi-Fi Enabled Smartphone, PDAs) or the highly anticipated Nokia 9500 Communicator (see Nokia Adds Wi-Fi to Communicator Series).

Here's the story:

A Swedish newspaper is reporting that Nokia plans to announce the 9300 Communicator in September. This smartphone will be a scaled-down version of the upcoming 9500 Communicator, which the mobile phone giant announced several months ago.

The 9300 will feature the same operating system (Symbian OS 7.0), user interface (Series 80) and design (clamshell with keyboard and 640x200 pixel resolution display) as the 9500. It won't, however, integrate a digital camera or Wi-Fi like the other smartphone. This should make the 9300 a smaller device.

More details about the 9300 will come to light when Nokia officially announces it in New York this September. Both the 9300 and the 9500 Communicators should land in users' hands later this Fall.

Three New iPAQs All in a Row
HP lists three new iPAQS, the hx2100, hx2400, and hx2700 (see image), on its website. These Pocket PCs weren't part of the computer and printer giant's highly publicized product announcements last month, which included the h6315 smartphone, the rx3000 series, rz1710 and rz1715.

The hx2700 and its brethren may replace the high-end h5000 series. Brighthand reports this device should integrate a biometric fingerprint scanner as the h5550 does for security.

Other reports place the hx2700 as running on Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and a 624 MHz XScale processor with 128MB of RAM and 128MB of ROM, of which 64 MB can be used as an integrated memory card.

Other features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking, a Secure Digital slot, a CompactFlash slot and a 3.5-inch QVGA (240x320) display. It should ship in November for around $550.

Less is known about the other two models. MobileGadgetNews says another hx2000 Pocket PC will be like the hx2700—except it won't integrate biometric security and will bundle half the amount of RAM and ROM.

This other hx2000 model would still feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as two types of expansion slots. It should also ship in November, but for $350—$200 less than the hx2700.

We'll report more details on all three new iPAQ Pocket PCs in the hx2700 series as they emerge.
