Traveling alone on business can be a lonely proposition. That's why bringing a companion along, even an electronic one, can help.

Enter MobiMate and its WorldMate application for handhelds. While it doesn't offer the comfort of a home-cooked meal, it does provide the weary traveler with information that can make the road easier and more bearable to traverse.

WorldMate is a popular download for Palm, Windows Mobile (Pocket PC & Smartphone), and Symbian (UIQ & Series 60) PDAs and smartphones. But it has never been available for a popular cell phone platform.

That is...until now.

MobiMate has finally released a version of WorldMate for J2ME for Java-based mobile handsets, such as Sony Ericsson's Z1010 and Motorola's v600.

Like the smartphone and PDA editions of WorldMate, the new version delivers time, weather, currency conversion, and graphical day/night maps for countries and cities around the world.

MobiMate's CEO Nadav Gur said "WorldMate Standard Edition is a clear demonstration of the capabilities of J2ME phones. We have waited years for these phones to evolve to a point where we can provide a compelling bundle of functionality and user experience."

If you own a J2ME phone and want WorldMate for your mobile handset, you'll have to check with your mobile operator. You see, it can't be bought directly, as initially, the J2ME version of WorldMate is only being sold through select wireless operators and handset vendors.
