iMViewer Streams Live Video to BREW, J2ME Handsets

Today's more capable mobile networks are creating markets for new data-based applications, such as the streaming of live video to a handheld or mobile handset for security or other more entertainment orientated purpose.

Last month, we highlighted a company called Inetcam, as it launched iMViewer, an IP-based solution for streaming live video to BREW-enabled mobile phones. This week, the company added another piece to the puzzle with the announcement that iMViewer now supports Java 2 Platform Micro Edition or J2ME-enabled mobile handsets.

J2ME is a Sun Microsystems backed standard that competes with QUALCOMM's BREW platform for the delivery of wireless applications to mobile devices. By supporting both standards, Inetacam greatly expands the number of mobile phones and smartphones iMViewer supports.

"This is another step in our mission to allow our customers to access any video, anytime and anywhere," exclaimed Al Cavagnero, CEO of Inetcam. "Cell phones are ubiquitous today, and our customers can now utilize them as security and monitoring devices to complement their IP-based system."

With iMViewer users can monitor virtually any network connected camera or video source live at 10 framers per second. End users can pair iMViewer with Inetcam's iVISTA software. This allows them to set up motion detection profiles, time-lapse recording, alert notification and live monitoring.

You must subscribe to iMViewer through a wireless carrier, however. So even if you like the idea of a live video stream to your smartphone or cell phone, if your mobile operator doesn't offer the service then there is no way to get it through iMViewer.
