By James Alan Miller
German consumers will soon have two new smartphones from which choose: the Palm-based ITM Technology AG's hagenuk SmartPhone S 200, and, at long last the Sidekick II (based on Danger'sHiptop2 platform) through T-Mobile Germany. Notwithstanding the Paris Hilton affair (some say it actually boosted sales), the Sidekick II has been a real success story for T-Mobile in the United States and, as the Hiptop2, for a number of carriers throughout much of Europe. It is one of a select group of handsets to put the benefits of a smartphone in reach of the average consumer. T-Mobile Germany's VP of Terminal Management Michael Schuld noted, "The obvious success of the Sidekick II in the U.S. has compelled us to bring this popular product to Germany. He views the Sidekick II as a way to boost earnings, not doubt countering the drastic reduction in voice service revenues of recent years experienced by so many wireless carriers. Schuld said, "We see value-added data services and personalization as the next major wave of growth in the mobile consumer market. Danger's platform provides the ideal means of addressing this opportunity." By entering the German market, Danger gets the chance to reach an additional 25 million people with its platform. In fact, T-Mobile Germany is the largest operator yet to partner with the company. The carrier hasn't said how much the Sidekick II would cost yet. As for the new Palm handset, platform developer PalmSource and ITM Technology AG introduced the hagenuk SmartPhone S 200 during a press conference at the CeBit trade show in Germany today. The compact phone has 32 MB of RAM, 64 SDRAM flash memory, a Secure Digital slot for memory and peripheral expansion, a 1.3-megapixel camera for photos and video, and Bluetooth to wireless connect to headsets printers, computers and other peripherals. There's also a five-way jog dial for navigation, and its it's 2.2-ich display supports 65,536 colors. As a Palm OS smartphone the device ships with the standard array of personal information management applications and SMS, MMS, WAP, e-mail, Java support. ITM plans to release the hagenuk SmartPhone S 200 this April for 449 Euros. Related Links:
