By James Alan Miller
Socket Communications expanded platform support for its Bluetooth-based Cordless Hand Scanner to Symbian Series 60 and 80 smartphones by Nokia this week. Particularly popular in Europe and Asia, Symbian handsets are by far the most common type of smartphone. The scanner—already compatible with Pocket PC, Windows XP, and Palm-based mobile devices—lets you scan bar code data directly into any application on a wirelessly connected smartphone, laptop, tablet, or PDA. Features include Fuzzy Logic technology for reading damaged, poorly printed, or hard to read bar codes and a Class 1 Bluetooth radio for the maximum possible range. Socket embedded a beeper in the scanner to confirm the accurate transmission of data to host and a built in touch screen stylus tip to help facilitate one-handed use. A Software Developers Kit (SDK) is available separately for those who wish to embed control of the scanner into their applications. Related Links:
