In spite of its position as the best-selling cell phone and smartphone vendor in the world, over the last couple of years Nokia hasn't been known for releasing cutting-edge products. That perception could change now that the mobile phone giant has introduced a new line of smartphones, the Nseries.
Nokia says the name of the game with the Symbian platform and Series 60 interface Nseries is multimedia, style and innovation. Features distributed across the initial three models, the N90, N91 (see top image) & N70, include 3G, megapixel cameras (one handset integrates Zeiss optics), multi-gigabyte memory, VHS resolution video, and Wi-Fi.
Nokia VP Anssi Vanjo asserts the Nseries phones "are actually powerful pocketable computers with a comprehensive set of multimedia features."
In terms of design, all three handsets sport stainless steel finishes in black pearl and smooth silver color pallets.
Nokia N90
You could say the GSM/GPRS/EDGE (900/1800/1900 MHz) Nokia N90 is the photographer of the Nseries family, as the device is the first camera phone equipped with Carl Zeiss optics. Consequently, the N90 purports to offer superior image quality with its 2-megapixel camera.
With the N90, Nokia implements a new flexible multi-hinge twist-and-shoot design that lets you rotate the smartphone's 262k color and 352 x 416 pixel resolution (both firsts for a Nokia handset) display to almost any desired position.
A second smaller screen supports 65K colors and a 128 x 128 pixel resolution. And both displays can be used as viewfinders.

Additional features include a built-in flash, red eye reduction, and the ability to adjust white balance and brightness. You can take pictures up to 1600 x 1200 pixels in size and record video at 352 x 288 pixels. The N90 can play back MPEG4 and H.263 video plus MP3, RealAudio and AAC audio files.
There's also 31 MB of integrated memory and an RS-MMC card slot for additional storage. Users can connect wirelessly to a printer or headsets, for example, with Bluetooth. The N90 also supports fast USB 2.0 for wired connectively.
N90 - Carl Zeiss Optics Camera Phone
A five-way joystick rests on top of the phone’s keypad, and it bundles the normal suite of Series 60 Web browsing, messaging and personal information management (PIM) applications, as do the other members of the Nseries.
The Nokia N90 is the first Nseries model due out of the gate. It is slated to ship in the second quarter for an as-of-yet undisclosed price.
Nokia N91
Next up in the series is the audio-centric Nokia N91 phone. This model features a 4 GB hard disk to hold up to 3,000 songs, according to Nokia.
No doubt the N91 is designed to compete with Sony Ericsson's upcoming W800 walkman phone, while both handsets take aim at standalone hard disk-based MP3 players like Apple's iPod.
Nokia placed a 3.5 mm stereo jack for headphones right into the phone, so there's no need for dongles, and bundles a headset and remote control.
The N91 also has dedicated keys for its audio player functions, which support the MP3, AAC, WMA and M4A music formats. An industry standard mini USB 2.0 port support should make transferring files fast and easy. Of course, Nokia will bundle music management software with the smartphone.
Other audio features include an 8-band equalizer, an FM radio, and the capability to download music files over the air. Wireless features include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi plus a GSM/GPRS/EDGE (900/1800/1900 MHz) cellular radio. Like the N90, EDGE provides the phone’s 3G component.
N91 - 3GB Hard Drive / Audio Controls Up & Down
The N91, like the other models in the Nseries integrates a 2-megapixel camera for up to 1600 x 1200 still images and video. Unlike the photo phone N90, the N91 and the N70 (see below) doesn't implement Carl Zeiss optics.
Its screen runs at 176 x 208 pixels and the smartphone offers the same Series 60 software features as the other Nseries models. The N91 is said to be much smaller than the relatively bulky N90, but not as tiny as the N70.
The N91 is due to ship worldwide by the end of the year.
Nokia N70
The dual mode, GSM/GPRS (900/1800/1900 MHz) Nokia N70 is the world's smallest Series 60 based 3G WCDMA device with a 2-megapixel camera. As with the N91, it integrates an FM radio. Up close, however, it is said to look very much like Nokia’s current high-end model, the 6680.
N70 - Slider Protects Lens
With the N70’s 2-megapixel camera you can take for picture and video. And like the N91, there’s a flash and a red-eye reduction feature. Media formats supported by the N70 include MP3, AAC, RealAudio, H.263 and MPEG4.
The smartphone integrates Bluetooth and USB 2.0 for connectivity, a slot for RS-MMC should the N70 experience a power drain.
The N70 should ship during the third quarter of 2005.
