VoiceSignal Goes Download Route for Update

By James Alan Miller

Today's PDAs, smartphones and feature phones have more than enough power to support accurate voice control and speech recognition that doesn't require training. VoiceSignal, a company that provides these capabilities, has released the first downloadable version of one of its own speaker-independent voice command products, VSuite.

VSuite 2.0 is available as an upgrade to the version 1.3 edition shipped with the Motorola's popular MPx220 Windows Smartphone. VoiceSignal says 2.0 simplifies the structured dialogue interface of VSuite by allowing the user to make a single natural command to dial a number, dial or lookup contacts, or launch applications installed on the MPx220.

Users can also now address text messages with a single simple "send text to" command, making "single-click" message addressing possible. Like all VoiceSignal solutions, this speaker independent application requires no training, and any contacts added to the phone's contact list or SIM card are automatically voice enabled.

Before this week's announcement, VoiceSignal sold VSuite exclusively to original equipment manufacturers and original device manufacturers. (In addition to Motorola, you'll find the company's speech recognition and command products in a variety of Nokia, Samsung, Panasonic, palmOne, Audiovox, and Sendo handsets. VoiceSignal CEO Rich Geruson says, "In the past, consumers were limited to the VoiceSignal features that were bundled into their phone. We're excited to offer consumers the opportunity to upgrade to our latest product offerings by introducing our new software titles through Handango."

While the VSuite 2.0 download is specific to the Motorola MPx220, Geruson's statement indicates additional editions of the application, as well as other VoiceSignal products, may soon find their way directly to consumers via the same channel.

VSuite 2.0 for the Motorola MPx220 is available from Handango for $19.99.
