Software Updates for Treo 680 and 750 (with Windows Mobile 6) Coming Soon?

Owners of the Treo 750 have waited a long time for a shot at upgrading their smartphones to Windows Mobile 6. Well, according to a supposed AT&T presentation (posted to TreoCentral's message boards), their frustrations may soon come to end. As reported by Palm Infocenter, a couple of slides, one for the Treo 750 and the other for the Palm OS Treo 680, strongly indicate free maintenance software releases should be coming soon for both smartphones.

For the Treo 750 that means Windows Mobile 6, of course, an upgrade to 1.8Mbps HSPDA (a 3.5G cellular networking technology) for much faster data transfers, "improved phone controls" and the addition of a number of AT&T Entertainment and productivity applications, including AT&T Mail, AT&T Music, Cellular Video, MobiTV, TeleNav, among other features. All of which should eventually come pre-installed on freshly bought Treo 750s.

As for the Treo 680, it is supposed to get MobiTV and TeleNav as well, in addition to improved push-to-talk, support for MP3 ringtones, and instant messaging.

Unfortunately, the slides say the software upgrade for the Treo 750 is due on to arrive on October 15th, a date that came and went a week ago. It doesn't get much better for Treo 680. Its upgrade was purportedly coming on October 22nd, today.

There's still no sign of either update, however. Hopefully, the slides are otherwise accurate and the delay is simply a minor hiccup. We'll keep you posted.
