Tip: iPhone - Developer Creates iPhone MMS Application

A new application from an iPhone developer at Swirly Space promises to finally bring multimedia messaging (MMS) to Apple’s smartphone. MMS, like a number of other features taken for granted by most other smartphone (and even cell phone) users, has not, until now, been available to iPhone owners.

For those who don't know what MMS is, the technology allows you to send and receive pictures and video with your mobile phone using yours and others phone numbers.

Because the new MMS application for the iPhone is new, it's got certain limitations and is pretty rough, according to the developer. For example, you can only send MMS messages, not receive them. Also, while pictures are supported, video isn’t yet.

You can download the application, MMS App v.01, here.

Before installing this (or any other native iPhone) software for that matter, you need to jailbreak your iPhone. Jailbreaking opens the iPhone up to native third-party software. It is something Apple is strongly against; although it hasn't offered developers a way to create native software for iPhone users yet itself.

Apple plans to open the iPhone up to 'official' native third-party applications with the release of a software development kit (SDK) in February, along with the implementation of some sort of application approval process, however. Meanwhile, click here for some good instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone.

And since MMS App v.01 isn't loadable through the native software Installer developed by hackers, you must load the software manually.

To do this unzip MMS App v.01, copy the files in the package to /Applications/MMS.app on your iPhone, and then make the application executable by issuing the following command: chmod +x /Applications/MMS.app/mms.

Next, restart SpringBoard (the iPhone home screen) to have the software's icon show up on your iPhone and then configure your MMS settings.

Detail directions on how to do all of this can be found here.
