BlackBerry 8300: What to Expect from RIM's Uber Smartphone

For months now the Internet rumor mill has been rife with buzz regarding the BlackBerry 8300, Research In Motion's (RIM) follow-up to the 8800 series. Some reports indicate this edition of RIM's popular QWERTY device will have it all.

So what can we expect from this new BlackBerry? Well, the first thing is the 8300 will almost certainly be cooler than the Pearl, the 8800 and the 8700. I went looking to find some concrete information about what might be part of the 8300 package

I found two Web sites that sell mobile phones that have pages for the 8300 up already. One just said it was coming soon to Vodafone—no specs were listed at all. Wirefly, on the other hand, actually says the 8300 will be available to Cingular customers during summer 2007.

Here are some highlights of the information about the 8300 gathered from Wirefly:

  •  Full QWERTY keyboard
  •  2.0 Megapixel camera/camcorder, with flash and timer
  •  GPS built in
  •  Music and Video player with support for MP3s and streaming multimedia plus an expandable memory slot
  •  Voice-activated dialing
  •  Bluetooth

Wirefly does not mention Wi-Fi, which has been reported to be part of the 8300 by some, and not by others. Different people who have had the 8300 in hand have reported opposite things, not only with the Wi-Fi, but also with regards to a camcorder.

It is possible there are different versions of the 8300 with a different mix of features. Or, the discrepancies could simply be part of the 8300's evolution from test phone to what you and I'll get to see by the time the device ships.

The debate over which provider will get the BlackBerry 8300 first and when that will be is ongoing. And it will probably continue until the day the press release comes out.

The front runners seem to be T-Mobile and AT&T (formally Cingular). One possible announcement date is May 7th.

This date came from Merrill Lynch who listed a potential launch of an 83xx on T-Mobile and a Verizon/Sprint Pearl on May 7th, which is RIM's Capital Markets Day. This jibes with remarks I've seen from others, which point to 8300 debut in the near future.
