HTC Site Inadvertently Confirms AT&T Tilt, BlackBerry Connect Support

By James Alan Miller
September 5, 2007

HTC's U.S. site is now the home of a helpful Getting Started Guide for setting up AT&T's Tilt smartphone for use with the BlackBerry Internet Service and BlackBerry Enterprise Server service through support for RIM's BlackBerry Connect program. BlackBerry Connect allows non-BlackBerry devices to work with the mob-e-mail leader's push e-mail and data access solutions just like a BlackBerry.

One problem though: The once-rumored now - apparently - confirmed Windows Mobile 6 Professional replacement to the carrier's popular and increasingly long-in-the-tooth Windows Mobile 5-run 8525 Pocket PC Phone hasn't been released yet.

So while we now have access to detailed directions on how to get the Tilt, which is based on HTC's Kaiser design, sending and receiving BlackBerry-based push e-mail, no doubt to the chagrin of AT&T, you can't actually purchase the smartphone to get it up and running in a BlackBerry environment.

Unfortunately, we’re still no closer to knowing when AT&T will finally release the Tilt, as HTC, doesn't spill the beans on that important piece of information as well. Too bad.

Last month, rumors indicated AT&T would launch the Tilt on September 3rd for $500 with a two-year agreement. Obviously, that date came and went a couple of days ago with still no Tilt in sight.

While the AT&T Tilt should look a lot like its predecessor-tablet design, full slider keyboard, 2.8-inch 240 x 320 pixel resolution touch display-there will be a number of improvements. For example, when you slide the keyboard out from underneath the screen, you'll be able to tilt the screen up laptop style.

The quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE smartphone should support AT&T's UMTS/HSDPA 3G data network and include GPS, a 2.8 megapixel camera, 400MHZ CPU, a Windows Mobile 6-friendly 128MB of RAM, 256MB of ROM, a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, and high-capacity 1500mAH battery.

As for BlackBerry Connect, the latest edition, version 4.0, allows for the wireless generation of an encryption key and activation of a device in an enterprise environment. It also adds AES encryption to the already supported Triple Data Encryption standard. IT now has the ability to erase and remotely disable a BlackBerry-enabled device as well.
