By James Alan Miller
November 13, 2008

RIM's launched a MySpace application for BlackBerry smartphones today. The software is available for download Iat www.blackberry.com/myspace or m.myspace.com from the BlackBerry browser. This news follows the release of Facebook application for BlackBerry by almost exactly a year.

The mob-e-mail leader is also launching a BlackBerry community page on MySpace at www.myspace.com/blackberry, where it plans to highlight the newest BlackBerry applications, both from RIM and their partners, as well as accessories, news, contests, new device tutorials, videos, etc., according to RIM.

RIM said the new MySpace for BlackBerry application is fully optimized to deliver rich content and data to users. It integrates MySpace's main social networking components with the BlackBerry platform to provide instant, push-based messaging to BlackBerry and MySpace users.

Here are a list of features:

  •
  • A full messaging interface, including comments, bulletins and messaging
  •
  • Real time status and mood updates.
  •
  • Find, add, and respond to friend requests
  •
  • Camera integration and optimized photo management allowing users to snap, sort and upload pictures
  •
  • View and comment on friends' albums and photos
  •
  • Notification of new MySpace events (message and friend requests.)

Though the majority of RIM's customers still fall into the business category, the mob-e-mail and U.S. smartphone leader has taken several steps towards consumers over the past couple of years, with the release of the BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry Curve and, soon, the BlackBerry Storm—the first RIM smartphone with a touch screen, a la the iPhone.

RIM just announced Verizon Wireless will release the BlackBerry Storm (see right) on November 21st, making it available online and in stores. The smartphone will go for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $50 rebate.
