By James Alan Miller
Documents To Go, first introduced for the Palm OS ten years ago, will soon find its way to Google's Android platform. DataViz, the company behind the popular mobile office suite, made the announcement on its Office Mobility Blog last week.
As with other editions of the softwarealso available for Windows Mobile, RIM BlackBerry and Symbian (S60 and UIQ) devicesthe 'gPhone' edition of the Documents To Go will allow users to users to view, edit and sync Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) documents and PDF files in their native formats right on their smartphone. The first Google-run phone, the T-Mobile G1, is almost two months old now.
DataViz didn't give an exact date of release, but expects Documents To Go as well as another app, called RoadSync, to be released for Android sometime next year. RoadSync is an Exchange ActiveSync client. The DataViz blog adds:
I can't share much more about this right now, but I will tell you we have a team plugging away as we speak. I’ve seen what they’ve done so far and must say I’m impressed (note the screenshot on the left; that’s not just a bunch of Photoshop work, that’s the real deal!). You can sign up here to be kept up-to-date on the development of Documents To Go and RoadsSync for Android. A full-featured mobile office suite, not available in Android natively, and ActiveSync client are essential if Google's smartphone OS is going to be taken seriously as a business and enterprise tool. It is no surprise that DataViz is stepping in to fill the void. A month ago, DataViz updated Documents To Go to version 11 for the Palm OS. Related Links:
