By James Alan Miller
In addition to allowing 'gPhone' users to read, create and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, the Android edition of Quickoffice will, not surprisingly, allow users to do the same with Google Doc documents (see image). Through a partnership with a company called SoonR, users will even be able to access their Office documents from a remote location, say on home or office desktop PC. Android-based smartphones aren't expected to ship until later this year or early next. The mobile platform falls under the auspices of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), which - in addition to Google - is composed of major mobile telephony, semiconductor, and mobile handset players. See here for a slideshow of screen shots of the Quickoffice prototype for Android in action. Quickoffice is also developing a version of its eponymous mobile office suite for the iPhone.
