Kingston Drops 8GB microSDHC Card for Phones

Kingston has just launched an 8GB microSDHC card ($58). That's 8GB of storage packed into a memory card smaller in size than the fingernail on your pinky. The new card can store more than 1,500 digital songs, over 4,000 images from a 5 megapixel phone, or up to eight hours of

The tiny - .43 x 0.59 x 0.039-inch ( 11 x 15 x 1.0-millimeter) microSDHC format has emerged as the predominant mobile memory standard, as more and more manufacturers, including HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, RIM, and Samsung integrate it into their cell phones and smartphones. Recent models tested with the new Kingston 8GB microSDHC card include the BlackBerry Pearl 8120; the LG evV2 and Voyager; as well as the Samsung BlackJack II and Glyde.

Keep in mind, although the microSDHC format is identical in physical size to the original microSD card, microSDHC is compatible with microSDHC host devices only and not backward compatible with standard microSD-enabled devices or readers. Permanent Record
In related news, SanDisk recently introduced the SD WORM card, a Write Once Read Many (WORM) digital memory card intended for professional uses such as police investigations, court testimony, electronic voting and other applications where data files must be protected from alteration or deletion.

This card is intended to replace Analog recording media such as film and audio tape, which are rapidly becoming obsolete, as demand grows for a format suitable for today's digital devices. The problem is conventional rewritable memory cards do not meet legal requirements to prevent data tampering.

According to SanDisk, data written to its SD WORM cards is effectively locked as soon as it is recorded; there is no physical way to alter or delete individual recorded files. Viewing the data is simple, however, because the cards are readable in any standard SD slot attached to a computer or other SD-compatible device.

SanDisk SD WORM cards also offer 100-year archive life, when kept under appropriate storage conditions.
