Tip: Vacation? Strategies for Disconnecting from Your Mobile

Looking for a chance to really get away this vacation but can't face telling your boss you won't be checking e-mail while you're gone? Check into one of western Canada's Fairmount Resorts and pay to unplug. Special packages at the Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise and Whistler hotels include pampering, guiding, and the obligation (invitation?) to hand over your handheld to the inn's safe.

These upscale resorts (and other hotels – simply ask the concierge) include the smartphone babysitting in pricey packages, but there are other ways, in other places, to disconnect.

For example, set an auto-reply to your e-mail, record an extended message on your voice mail and ask a colleague to fight immediate fires. Then just turn off your phone and chuck it in your sock drawer-or suitcase if you just can't leave it behind- til you get home from vacation.

Need more help? Head to remote areas where coverage is spotty or nonexistent and you don't have to fake the excuses.
