Verizon's shiped 100,000 Motorola Droids, the carrier's latest shot accross the bow of the iPhone, in less than a week since its launch last week Friday,
reported Bloomberg.
While impressive, that is nowhere near iPhone territory. Early in the summer, Apple sold over a million iPhone 3GS phones...during its first weekend of availability. Broadpoint AmTech Inc. predicts Verizon will move a million of the Google Android-run Droids during the fourth quarter and an additional 10 million next year.
The Droid is, perhaps, the most well-received smartphone since the iPhone. It is the first device to run on Android 2.0 and includes Google Maps Navigation.
It includes a hi-res touch display over a horizontal slider keyboard. There's also a 5-megapixel camera, an accelerometer, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, advanced web browser, and a powerful 550MHz processor. The smartphone weighs 6 ounces and measures 4.6-inches x 2.4 x 3.7 inch inches, and includes 5.5mm headphone jack, micro-USB port and a 16GB micro-SD card.
Verizon sells the Droid for $199 after rebates.
Rumor has it a software update for the Droid is already in the making from Verizon and Motorola. This firmware upgrade would be delivered to Droid users over the air.
