Skyfire Updates Windows Mobile Browser

By James Alan Miller
December 15, 2009

Skyfire recently upgraded its web browser for Windows Mobile smartphones to version 1.5. Available for download here, Skyfire now include full support for high-resolution screens, a new user interface that is more finger friendly, crisper text, smoother zooming, and a full-screen mode that maximizes screen real estate.

The Skyfire mobile browser aims to bridge the gap between PC-based and mobile browsing by providing speedier performance and better content support, which it does by processing Web content on its own servers before delivering it to the mobile device.

Here is what's new in Skyfire 1.5:

  •
  • Skyfire now provides native support for the VGA and wVGA resolutions.
  •
  • Smooth Scrolling - Kinetic scrolling has been added to Skyfire. This is supposed to make scrolling by flicking your finger much smoother.
  •
  • Full screen mode - For touch screens there's a new mode that removes all user interface elements from the screen to provide maximum visibility on the page. Tap the bottom right corner to bring back the toolbar.
  •
  • Auto-Move text entry - This keeps any text entry box visible when the virtual keyboard is used. This aims to assure that site forms are easy to use, in case the SIP (i.e. virtual keyboard) covers it.
  •
  • Support for the latest versions of Flash 10 and Silverlight, the most common way to view video and animations on the Web.
  •
  • Performance enhancements - Both Skyfire's client and servers have been upgraded for faster, more responsive browsing.

See the links below for more on Skyfire and the video to watch the browser in action.
