Hot Smartphones for Summer Season

A number of new smartphones are set (or rumored )to launch over the next few weeks and months. You've got the next-gen iPhone from Apple due in July and the Palm Pre due this weekend, for instance.

These are just a couple of the high-profile launches, however. Below is an overview of some other models we expect will make it into folks’ hands relatively shortly.

BlackBerry Flip for Verizon Wireless
The country's largest mobile operator just made last month's rumor official: Verizon's announced plans to launch a CDMA/EV-DO edition of RIM's BlackBerry Pearl Flip—the mob-e-mail leader's first clamshell handset—in two weeks, on June 19th. The smartphone will go for $130 with a two-year contract and after a $70 mail-in rebate.

Unlike T-Mobile, which has been the exclusive provider of the Flip since launching the handset launched last September, Verizon is a CDMA/EV-DO carrier. That means a Verizon version of the Flip would rely on EV-DO Rev. A technology for 3G connectivity, a gain over the T-Mobile model, which has no 3G whatsoever.

The Verizon edition will drop the T-Mobile Flip's Wi-Fi technology, however.

Pharos Traveler 137 -- Unlocked for AT&T, T-Mobile
The Pharos Traveler 137 is a navigation-focused Windows Mobile smartphone that provides voice-prompted directions.

It is a powerful tablet-shaped, quad-band GSM/tri-band HSPA 3G smartphone with a 800-by-480-pixel touch screen, two cameras, a 528MHz CPU, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with wireless stereo headset support, a microSD slot, 256MB of RAM, 512MB of ROM, and a 1390 Li-Ion battery for up to 4 hours of talk or 200 hours of standby time.

It measures 4.60 x 2.40 x 0.51 inches and weighs 4.9 ounces. See the full specs of the Traveler 137 here.

As an unlocked handset, you can use the Traveler with most any GSM carrier. It goes for around $600.

Nokia N91 -- Unlocked for AT&T, T-Mobile
You could finally pre-order Nokia's latest uber smartphone, the N97, early last month. Now comes word, straight from Nokia, that the N97 will ship worldwide (75 countries in all) by the end of June.

The Symbian/S60-run N97 combines a QWERTY keyboard with a 3.5-inch touch screen and, like the Palm Pre, places an emphasis on social networking. It is Nokia's second Symbian/S60 phone with a touch display.

Additional features include 32GB of internal memory, GPS w/A-GPS, a 5 megapixel camera, microSDHC memory expansion with a 16GB card included, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, integrated compass, TV-out, and the ability to play 30-fps MPEG-4/H.264, Windows Media, RealVideo, and Flash videos. It is supposed to get 320 minutes of talk time and 400 hours of standby time on 3G networks.

The N97 Weighs 5.3 ounces and measures 4.6 x 2.2 x 0.6 inches

The unlocked smartphone will go for $700 in the U.S.

And There's More...
  • Acer is starting to roll out a pair, the Tempo F900 and Tempo M900, of unlocked Windows Mobiles. The M900 sports a horizontal QWERTY keyboard that slides out from underneath its 3.8-inch, WVGA touch screen. It also sports a 5-megapixel camera with flash and auto-focus, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a microSD slot, biometric fingerprint scanner for security, and 128MB of RAM. You can pick one up for $700. The yet-to-be released F900 is similar to the M900, but lacks the keyboard and scanner.

  • T-Mobile released a statement committing to rolling out its next-generation Google Android-run smartphone over the next few months. It reads: "T-Mobile is planning to offer the follow-on device to the T-Mobile G1 early this summer."

  • LG's plans to start shipping its GD910 watch phone in Europe in July. Next up for Dick Tracy-like video phone (over super fast 7.2Mbps HSDPA 3.5G): Asia, the Middle East, Australia and Latin America.

  • The 5630 XpressMusic from Nokia is now available in Europe.

  • Sony Ericsson's W995a, a Walkman music phone, is set to ship on July 6th in the U.S. for about $600. Among other things, this baby sports a 8.1 megapixel camera with lots of cool features (like image stabilization) to make picture taking a breeze. You’ll be able pick one up at Sony Style.

  • Samsung expects to release the Pixon 12, a 12 megapixel camera phone, in Europe later this month; followed by other regions throughout the summer.

  • It is rumored that Verizon will release the follow up to the BlackBerry Storm, RIM's first touch screen model, by the end of the year. It may even get Palm’s Pre model at that time as well.
